Stay Safe and Ask Questions

Criminals tend to target people who appear vulnerable. People who work from home, or who have elderly relatives who live at home, should be aware of strangers at the door. Many fraudsters are turning to online crime to steal their money. However, there is still a significant amount of people who report door-to-door crime everyday within the U.K. While some of these crimes are easy to spot, many others are cleverly disguised.

One of the most common face-to-face scams involves house work. This occurs when someone arrives at your house and offers you an unbelievable deal for home repairs from bulding companies or a new security alarm from fake security companies. The scam works in a couple of different ways. For example, someone might arrive and offer to pave your driveway for you. Once the job is complete, you might find that the driveway begins to fall apart in a matter of days. This person did not use the proper protocol for paving the driveway, and they only made it appear as though they did the job correctly. Other house repair services will simply take your money and run. Do not trust someone who has a business card or legitimate-looking work van. These things can easily be falsified.

Fraud conducted within the home often occurs with salesmen. Again, they will offer you a deal that just seems to good to be true. If it appears to be too good to be true, then it most likely is a scam. These people will get you to write a check for goods which never arrive. They might even take your check information to create a new bank account in your name
